I'grand trying to plan out a mod in my head...once more, and I have a question.

Basically, like the topic says, is it possible to flame polish plexi with a heatgun? Flame polishing beingness where you have a piece of plexi and bring it barely over the melting indicate and so that scratches/frosting from sanding comes out and the plexi is clear again.

I'm trying to set up a upkeep, and since I take to purchase either a torch or a heatgun for this project, I would rather buy the heatgun because one time this chore is done in that location is a higher chance that I will use it again.

I've also heard of using sanding with something around 1200 grit sandpaper, and so using a dremel (presumably with a polishing bike) and toothpaste to clear information technology upward.

Thanks.

Edit: I too forgot to mention that this will exist washed, nigh probable, to 1/two" to iii/4" plexi.

well, I have no idea if it'd work, merely practice it and get back to us with pictures, proficient or bad outcome. lol

I'd propose you practice NOT use a torch to estrus upwardly plexi... information technology'southward too likely to scorch the surface. If you think a scratch is bad, try getting rid of a black and blistered scorch mark.

I've polished plexi (really acrylic) back to its original clarity fairly easily. I used 120 to become it to the right shape, then used a bucket of water and wet/dry sandpaper going from 220 to 320 to 400 to 600 to 1000 to 2000 and finishing up with polishing chemical compound applied by mitt with a rag. The polishing compound is what actually fabricated it "pop" back.

Torch volition work, but yous demand to do to get it right. Heat gun may not work - the heat is too diffuse and by the time it gets up to a high enough temperature, the whole piece may exist too hot and commencement to warp.

What is polishing compound? Do you lot mean rubbing chemical compound or the polishing compound that comes with Dremels?

Either way, I may go that road because it sounds cheaper than the heatgun.

I've tried acrylic with a heatgun and I had some bug. It was hard getting it to heat upward enough to polish it and so the bespeak at which it did beginning to melt, it almost immediately started bubbling. But I simply tried it once. I'm sure others would probably exist more experienced.

What y'all can try is adding a nozzle for heatguns that concentrates the rut to a smaller point so that you can go the acrylic to the melting point and so it polishes. I've seen these nozzles around just you'll have to observe out what heatguns information technology works with. Yous can become a butane torch real cheap nowaday. I have i I use just for polishing acylic. It was like xx for the torch and 6 for the tin can of butane.

Rubbing compound for auto paint finishes. Cheap and works like a charm.
